Cervical Cancer & HPV Project

The CMA Foundation has initiated a project addressing the link between Human Papillomavirus [HPV] and Cervical Cancer. The goal of the project is to educate both patients and clinicians about the connection between the HPV virus and cervical cancer with the ultimate aim of promoting strategies that can prevent both cervical cancer and HPV.

The project provides clinicians with resources to -
  • Increase their clinical understanding of the link between cervical cancer and HPV.
  • Strengthen their communication with patients.
  • Broaden their understanding of the health disparities and cultural differences associated with cervical cancer and HPV.
  • Increase their understanding of the HPV vaccine.

With physicians and other healthcare providers in mind, the CMA Foundation and our expert panel of advisors identified a number of excellent resources to assist clinicians in locating the most up-to-date and useful resources for patient education, provider information and continuing medical education. Patient counseling and education are critical and should be assisted by the use of written materials. Patients who are well informed are more likely to take an active role in their follow up care, which could directly reduce the chances that high-risk types of genital HPV will progress to cervical cancer.
